   8 Weeks Before

   Plan & price it out

   • Set a realistic moving budget (movers, supplies, deposits, cleaning).
   • Request 2–3 in-home or virtual estimates. Confirm the mover is licensed & insured in Colorado.
   • Start a moving binder or shared note with quotes, contacts, and receipts.
   • If you're moving into a new build in Windsor, Severance, or Wellington, confirm your closing date and any HOA move-in rules.

   6 Weeks Before

   Declutter & downsize

   • Sort every room into keep / donate / sell / recycle.
   • Book donation pickups or a junk-removal service for items you won't take.
   • Measure large furniture against doorways and stairways at the new home.
   • Start gathering boxes, packing paper, tape, and markers.

   4 Weeks Before

   Lock in the move

   • Confirm your moving date and get the estimate in writing.
   • Begin packing seasonal, decorative, and rarely-used items.
   • Notify schools in PSD, Thompson, or Weld districts and request records.
   • Refill prescriptions and transfer pet records to a Northern Colorado vet if needed.

   2 Weeks Before

   Utilities & address changes

   • Schedule utility transfers at your current and new address (see the local providers list below).
   • File a change of address with USPS at moversguide.usps.com.
   • Update your driver's license and vehicle registration with the Colorado DMV — you have 30 days after moving.
   • Update your bank, insurance, employer, subscriptions, and voter registration.
   • Arrange time off for moving day and childcare or pet care.

   1 Week Before

   Final push

   • Finish packing everything except daily essentials.
   • Label every box clearly with the destination room — not just the contents.
   • Pack an 'open first' box: chargers, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, snacks, and basic tools.
   • Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer 24 hours before the move.
   • Confirm parking access — some Fort Collins Old Town and downtown Greeley streets require permits for large trucks.

   Moving Day

   Show up ready

   • Walk the crew through both properties and point out fragile or high-priority items.
   • Protect floors and door frames, especially in newer builds.
   • Keep valuables, documents, and your essentials bag with you — never on the truck.
   • Do a final walkthrough: closets, cabinets, garage, attic, and outdoor storage.
   • Confirm the inventory list and sign paperwork only after you've checked everything.
7. 7

   First Week in Your New Home

   Settle in

   • Test smoke and CO detectors; change batteries.
   • Locate the water shut-off and breaker panel.
   • Meet the neighbors — Northern Colorado communities are famously friendly.
   • Register kids for local activities and find your closest Poudre or High Plains library branch.
   • Leave an honest review for your moving company to help other neighbors.
